children-get-migraines-tooIt may be surprising to learn that children suffer from severe migraines, as well as adults. As much as 10% of children over the age of 10 have migraines, while under age 10, about 5% suffer migraines. Neurologists in the pediatric field acknowledge that migraines in young ones happen more often than the majority of people are aware of.

A Case of a Child with Migraines

One case that was reported on by ABC News involved a 12-year-old boy named Jacob Holladay. He was dealing with a horrible migraine and was finally brought to Children’s Hospital in California to find some relief. He said he was having intense pain on both sides of his temples but was worse on the left side. He had missed school for a whole week so far due to the pain, and this was the 3rd week he had to miss school because of migraines.

When a child experiences migraines, he often grows up to continue to have them as well. It is recommended by experts to learn to control them as soon as possible. There are few options for children to cope with migraines, leaving parents wondering where to turn.

Why Migraines Happen and What to Do

A link has been seen between a misalignment in the bones of the upper neck vertebrae and migraines in children and adults alike. It is a problem often disregarded. The issue comes in when this misalignment begins to hinder the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the brain. Cerebrospinal fluid drainage may also be restricted. These are two potential causes of migraines.

If one of the bones of the upper neck – the C1 or C2 vertebra – becomes misaligned, it can put the brainstem under extreme stress. This causes improper information to be sent to the brain, and may also affect blood flow. Once this issue is corrected, proper blood flow can be restored. Here at Upper Cervical Hawaii, we use a gentle method that does not include popping or cracking the spine to help the bones realign, often bringing relief from migraines and potentially even helping them to go away completely.
