Migraine, Headache, Head Pain, Children, KidsAs an adult, if you’ve ever experienced a migraine, you’re quite aware how debilitating they can be.  The severe pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound all add up to a very unpleasant experience to say the least.  Adults are able to recognize and communicate the signs of a migraine, but what happens when children have migraines?  Parents may think that it’s just a typical headache, but kids can also experience severe migraines that can have a detrimental impact on their academic and social lives.

Migraines in Children: Facts to Know

Migraines have been reported in children as young as 18 months of age, and approximately 10 percent of kids between the ages of 5 and 15 have had a migraine episode.  Because children, especially very young ones, aren’t able to communicate like an adult would, their migraine condition may be more difficult to identify.  A few key indicators to consider if you suspect your child may have migraines are:

  • Family history of migraines – the chances of a child having migraines increases if one or both parents have migraines.
  • Colic – if a baby has had colic, some evidence shows that they’re more likely to develop migraines.
  • Torticollis – a spasm of muscles in the neck may be a precursor to developing migraines.

An Effective Care for Migraines in Children

Many parents are hesitant to give their children heavier doses of medications due to concerns about side effects.   More and more parents are seeking out a natural approach to addressing their kids’ migraine conditions, and Dr. Joe Breuwet is able to help.  Dr. Breuwet gets to the root cause of migraines in children (and adults) by examining the very specific alignment of the head and neck.  Since kids will be kids, they certainly have their share of skateboard crashes, falls on the soccer field, or other incidents of the sort.  Even minor slips and falls can cause a misalignment of the top vertebrae in the neck, and this puts abnormal pressure on the delicate nerves and tissues in this area which can lead to the development of migraines.  Dr. Breuwet’s technique is extremely gentle, which lends itself well to relieving children.  If your child is suffering from migraines, having their spinal alignment checked by an upper cervical chiropractor should be a top priority.
