How Residents of Honolulu Are Finding Natural Fibromyalgia Care

Fibromyalgia is a condition that leaves one feeling tired and frustrated, not knowing where to turn for help. One method becoming more common in the medical field is prescribing prednisone to relieve fibromyalgia. Does it work? Evidence suggests it may bring some relief. However, it also is associated with a variety of unwanted side effects. What are these?

Side Effects of Prednisone, a Fibromyalgia Medication

  • Allergic reactions
  • Abnormal sleep patterns
  • Abnormal sweating
  • Black, tarry stool or diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Anxiety or nervousness
  • Mood swings
  • No desire to eat or wanting to eat all the time
  • Immune system suppression
  • A whirling sensation
  • Problems with menstruation
  • Abnormal headaches

These are just a few of the unwanted side effects that come along with prednisone. Another thing to consider if one is using prednisone on a regular basis is that the adrenal glands are at risk for stopping the production of cortisol. When this occurs, family physicians will recommend cutting back on prednisone to give the adrenal glands time to recover. The end goal is to keep the person from having acute adrenal crisis – a life-threatening condition including rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure, fever, nausea, and more.

Weight gain is another side effect to consider. If a person has fibromyalgia and then begins to gain excessive weight, this can lead to depression. In turn, depression medication may be described, bringing with it a host of new side effects.

Getting Natural Help for Fibromyalgia

While prednisone may help to relieve some of the pain associated with fibromyalgia, it does not address the root cause. A link has been seen between fibromyalgia and a misalignment in the bones of the upper neck. A problem here stresses the brainstem and leads to improper signals being sent to the brain about how much pain a person is experiencing.

Here at Upper Cervical Hawaii, we offer our patients an alternative therapy. We use a gentle chiropractic adjustment that does not require us to pop or crack the spine. Rather, the method used encourages the bones to move back into place naturally, restoring internal communication and often helping ease the symptoms of fibromyalgia.
