migraines-which-type-of-care-gives-the-best-resultsEvery Honolulu migraine chiropractor uses a non-invasive technique developed more than four decades ago to give patients migraine relief. Migraines are very incapacitating to individuals who have them. New studies are digging more into the foundation of migraine pain. It is easier than ever to examine and understand how the nervous system and brain work.

In the past, most believed that migraines were due to constricted blood vessels in the head. However, recent studies revealed that migraines are a neurological disorder that involves brain chemicals and nerve pathways. Also, it’s now believed that many migraine cases run in the family. However, genetics is not the only answer. Some studies show that migraines are also due to environmental factors.

Migraine Symptoms and Traits

A lot of people have experienced at least one headache or migraine episode, one way or another. It is a must to know how to differentiate these two. Migraines are not just excruciating headaches. They are also an exceedingly debilitating collection of neurological symptoms that include:

  • Visual disturbances
  • Episodes that last anywhere from 4 to 72 hours
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Tingling or numbness in the arms, legs or face
  • Extreme sensitivity to touch, light, noise, and odor
  • Severe throbbing or pounding of the head usually only on one side but can only occur on both sides

Migraine symptoms are often different from one person to the next or from one episode to the other. Doctors diagnose patients by taking a focused analysis of their symptoms and their family histories. Medical testing can eliminate other possible causes for head pain.

Often, it is quite challenging to diagnose a migraine correctly, which brings considerable frustration to the patients and doctors. A headache specialist may be needed to deal with your symptoms if the clinical doctor’s care is insufficient. A Honolulu migraine chiropractor can also help in giving migraine relief.

A natural and safe, drug-free migraine care is available. But before that, let’s have a look at a type of care that’s fast becoming more popular. Check it out to see if it’s also the right one for you. Have you heard of medical marijuana?

Migraines and Medical Marijuana

Researchers have completed a study that claims medical marijuana can help patients with their migraines. They observed 121 migraineurs. These patients were each given medical marijuana from January of 2010 to September of 2014 to help with their migraines.

The test subjects reported that their migraine attacks reduced from 10 per month to less than 5 per month. Out of the 121 migraineurs, 103 saw a decrease in their overall migraines. Only three patients complained that their migraines increased over the time of the trial.

Not all of the participants of the medical study smoked the medical marijuana drug. Some of them ate it with food. Smoking marijuana seemed to work faster than eating it. Unfortunately, smoke inhalation also has its dangers and poses some risks to people’s overall health and wellbeing.

With the study’s many positive results, the researchers said it would be a huge help to patients with migraines in the United States, where cannabis is legal. The study led to more research. As a result, more states have legalized marijuana for medicinal use.

However, scientists and researchers admit that not everyone should immediately turn to medical marijuana to help relieve migraines and headaches because it can affect anyone very differently. Like any drug, marijuana has its health benefits and health risks. People need to be aware of the possible dangers with their continued or prolonged use.

Other Conditions That Medical Marijuana Can Help Treat

Cannabis has also been helpful in the following medical conditions for many patients:

  • Pain relief for cancer patients
  • Anxiety
  • PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • Stress
  • Mental health disorders
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Parkinson’s disease

Many believed that the reason medical marijuana helps with migraines has to do with the production of serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical in the body with a wide variety of functionality. It is most noted for its other name, the happy chemical, because it contributes to the body’s wellbeing and also induces happiness. However, this has not been proven in medical marijuana, and more research should be done to verify whether it is true or not.

Before you go out and find some medicinal marijuana to help relieve you from your migraines. Please keep in mind the warnings given about its possible side effects.

There is another alternative that is available today, actually for the past 40+ years, that has always been effective with migraines and comes with no side effects. This method is entirely natural, precise, and gentle. Best of all, it is drug-free. Have you guessed what it is yet?

Upper Cervical Chiropractic Results in Long-Term Migraine Relief

There was another remarkably encouraging study performed, which involved 101 migraine patients. Dr. Erin Elster examined these patients and found that everyone had a subluxation (misalignment) in the vertebrae of their upper cervical spine.

The study revealed that 87 of the patients recalled having some head or neck trauma or accident before the onset of their migraine attacks. Some accidents include snowboarding, skiing, ice skating, bicycling, horseback riding, football, gymnastics, car accidents, and other similar injuries. All these patients received tailored upper cervical adjustment to the bones of their upper neck. These adjustments happened throughout one to eight months. About 85 of these migraineurs shared a complete resolution of their migraines after their upper cervical chiropractic care. The rest saw significant results, less severity, and frequency of their migraine attacks.
