It has been noted that many children suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) also have issues with depression. In fact, the National Alliance on Mental Health states that 2% of elementary school age children show psychological warning signs that indicate they are or will be suffering from major depression in the future. This also holds true for 8% of preteens and teenagers.

The British Medical Journal reported on a study observing 542 children ages 12 to 18 who were suffering from CFS. Out of this group, 29% had some form of depression along with pain and anxiety. One may wonder how this is connected to CFS? Well, the symptoms are very similar – isolation, irritability, and isolation. What can a person do to help a child in this situation?

Caring for Chronic Fatigue

Many who suffer from CFS and depression seek the care of their family physician and are often sent home with a prescription to help alleviate some of the symptoms. However, unless the underlying cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is addressed, it will continue to cause long-term problems. People are trending toward wanting a natural, safe way to care for CFS, especially when children are involved.

Interestingly, anxiety, depression, fibromyalgia, mood disorders, and CFS can all be linked to a small misalignment in the upper bones of the neck that cause chaos throughout the body, leading to the above-mentioned symptoms. This happens because a misalignment of one of the top bones of the neck can lead to pressure being exerted on the brainstem, interrupting nerve flow and causing improper signals to be sent to and from the brain and body.

Here at our Honolulu, Hawaii office, we use a gentle method to allow the bones to move back into their original position without popping or cracking the spine (as general chiropractic is known for). We use dedicated x-rays to help us to determine exactly where the misalignment is. Once corrected, the communication system in the body can begin to function at its optimum. This is often all that is needed to see an improvement in chronic fatigue symptoms and, in turn, depression. Some have even seen an end to chronic fatigue symptoms.
