Tracking Down Migraine Triggers

Identifying Migraine Triggers

If you are one of the more than 37 million migraine sufferers across the country, identifying potential triggers is something you’ve likely considered doing if you haven’t already.  If you’ve sought out medical attention for your migraines, hopefully you’ve been encouraged to keep a migraine diary in which you record different factors that may be contributing to the onset of an attack.  Some triggers are well known, such as chocolate, wine, and hormonal changes during a female’s menstrual cycle.  However, some other triggers might be a bit more obscure, such as:

  • Strong perfumes
  • Flickering lights
  • Weather changes
  • Ripened cheeses
  • Stress & anxiety

Even if you’ve learned to cope with your migraines and make the best of it, the reality is that migraines that keep coming back shouldn’t be happening.  It can be a frustrating process getting to the bottom of your migraines, but there is hope.

Migraine and Its Connection to The Neck

Numerous approaches have been tried in order to bring relief to migraine sufferers from medications, therapies, and even surgical procedures.  Upper cervical chiropractic is an option that many migraine sufferers are turning to for lasting, natural relief.  A misalignment of one of the topmost vertebrae in your spine, the atlas (C1) or axis (C2) can cause changes in normal blood flow, cerebrospinal fluid flow, and nervous system function, which can all be contributing factors in migraines.

The good news is that misalignments in the upper cervical spine can be precisely and gently corrected for results that are long lasting.  At Upper Cervical Hawaii we analyze each individual patient for misalignments in the upper neck that can be the underlying cause of their migraines.  We take dedicated x-rays in order to determine the exact nature of the misalignment.  Everyone’s vertebrae are shaped with subtle differences that can influence how an adjustment must be made in order to correct the problem.  Once the spine is realigned, the body’s normal, natural healing processes occur, which can lead to a reduction in the frequency and severity of migraine episodes.
